UCCC NW Permanent bureau complete.

By Etoh Anzah George in Bamenda.

Municipal developmental initiatives remain the major brainchild of council heads owing to their role as representatives of the people. To meet some of these challenges, it is necessary for mayors to unite under an umbrella association to bargain for projects and even resources to ease their daunting developmental plans.

In Cameroon that umbrella association has been United Cities and Councils of Cameroon (UCCC) whose executive has a five-year renewable mandate to coordinate activities within the mayors’ sphere and also encourage the fostering of municipal projects as well as joint regional projects.

With the death of Mayor Elroy Khan of Santa municipality who assumed function on 15/09/14 and died on 15/09/17, the mayor Belo municipality was charged as interim but sadly enough its municipal head passed away on 16/01/19. It was therefore of a necessity to get a permanent bureau. On the understanding therefore that at the proclamation of a date for municipal elections all such posts are rendered unoccupied owing to the 5-year mandate expiration and mindful of a need to get representatives to continue the respective mandates, Mbombo Abel , mayor of Ndop; Bunyui Emmanuel, mayor of Ndu; Fonguh Cletus, mayor of Bamenda III, and Tanjoh Frederic Tetuh, mayor of Batibo, were proposed to run the activities of the organisation.

Speaking shortly after his election, Mayor Mbombo Abel saluted the trust given to him by his compatriots, and promised to keep the umbrella organisation alive and in line with the state laid down modalities. He insisted it’s a challenge he has chosen to accept and cognizant of its demanding nature he shall ensure all services are properly rendered.

Sitting in for the governor of the North West region, Harry Lanyuy, Secretary General at the NW Governors’ Office, told the mayors: "it’s time to start uplifting our barriers, breaking bounds and hitting straight for development". He urged the UCCC NW chapter to remember they have been voted by the people and not elected and this is because they saw development through them.

“I challenge UCCC to champion development, peace, national cohesion and national unity in the North West region". He further urged them to liaise with the regional technical services to come up with a development road map for the region, identify the potentials in all 34 local council areas and work as one man to exploit the endowments. He further insisted the Bamenda-Babadjou road is the entry point to all in the region and its dilapidating nature should be the concern of every mayor."We need a dry pot to be able to make resources for ourselves, and this should be the worry of all the mayors", he added. The ring road has to be done and you mayors have a pivotal role to play, he added.

To harness the regional developmental goal Harry insisted all potentials should be put down with a defined road map being an embodiment of a starting point and an eventual convergent point. No better association or organisation can champion this than UCCC. He insisted the mayors best know the challenges of the population than even the regular state authorities. The SG urged the mayors to take their rightful place and begin making things happen.
