Biya orders Yves Michel Fotso’s evacuation to Morocco for medical attention.
The former general manager of the defunct Cameroon Airline Company (CAMAIR) has been evacuated to Morocco for medical attention on the instructions of President Paul Biya.
Biya ordered the evacuation following the deterioration of Yves Michel Fotso’s health situation has in prison of recent. His ailment remains a guarded secret.
Yves Michel Fotso has been in prison for the past nine years. In 2012, he was sentenced to twenty five years in prison on the case of the purchase of a presidential plane. Four years after, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in a separate case for poor management at the helm of CAMAIR where he served as general manager from 2000 to 2003.
The authorization for evacuation has revived the debate on discrimination in such a discretional measure. Several other persons imprisoned for the embezzlement of state funds or managerial lapses have been denied such authorization.
It is also feared that the evacuation will give the son of business magnate, Victor Fotso, a chance to escape like former finance minister, Essimi Menye.
A lawyer, speaking on condition of anonymity, argued that it is theoretically impossible for a prisoner of this level to leave the country, moreover by air, " without the express agreement of the prince ". In the case of Yves Michel Fotso, whose passport had been withdrawn from the start of his legal troubles, the Presidency formally requested that his travel document be returned to him.
Observers attribute the “magnanimity” of Paul Biya in this case to his long-standing friendship with the father of Yves Michel who has shown unwavering loyalty to the president.
A long series of legal troubles
Yves-Michel Fotso has always claimed his innocence. At times, his lawyers even boycotted hearings of the Special Criminal Court, set up to try alleged perpetrators of large-scale corruption, to denounce procedural flaws. However, since the "Albatross affair", the unfinished purchase of a presidential plane, the Cameroonian justice system is taking a close interest in him.
In 2008, the judges already accused the former director general of the Camair of having taken advantage of this missed purchase to enrich himself. Four years later, in 2012, Yves-Michel Fotso was sentenced to 25 years in prison for having embezzled the equivalent of 25 million euros.
