Gov’t assures Cameroonians of effective schools resumption despite separatist threats.
If words could be accompanied by sufficient action on the ground, then the Cameroon government would have won the battle against school boycott in the North West and South West regions for the 2019/2020 academic year. Five members of government mounted the rostrum last Monday to assure Cameroonians of effective measures taken by government to guarantee hitch-free school resumption nationwide come September 2.
Communication minister, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, flanked by four members of government connected to education, used a press conference in Yaounde to urge Cameroonians, especially those in the Anglophone regions, to conquer fear and send their children to school.
Sadi said the child’s right to education was non-negotiable, and was guaranteed both by the Cameroon constitution and international treaties.
He further assured Cameroonians that security measures had been taken to protect children and teachers against attacks by separatists. He cited a series of attacks, kidnappings and killings perpetrated by separatists on school institutions in the course of 2019.
For her part, Dr Asheri Kilo, secretary of state for basic education, said it was time to sensitise the separatists and parents on the value of education.
Meanwhile, Boniface Bayola, secretary of state for teacher training in the ministry of secondary education, expressed satisfaction at the performance of students in end-of-year exams. He said teachers had the duty to mould Cameroonians and so must make sacrifices in this connection.
Mounting the rostrum, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, minister of higher education, gave encouraging statistics to show growing enrolment at the Universities of Bamenda and Buea for the last two years despite the Anglophone crisis.
Statistics were also given by Prof. Laurent Etoundi Ngoa to show that the minimum packages for schools in the two troubled regions were ready. Also over 1.5 billion FCFA has been set aside for rehabilitation of destroyed schools in both regions. Over 800 million FCFA, he announced, has also been disbursed to private schools as subvention.
