Bakundu women offer scholarships to 10 girls.
The Bakundu Benevolent Women (BBW) has offered scholarships to 10 girls who succeeded in the June 2019 session of the Cameroon General Certificate of Education. Four of the students are heading to the University while six of them are moving to Lower Sixth. The beneficiaries each took home FCFA 50 000, school bags and assorted didactic material. They were told not to hesitate on consulting the Bakundu Benevolent Women when faced with any obstacle in the course of the academic year.
Handing over the school items to the recipients, the Chair of Bakundu Benevolent Women (BBW), Ndoh Bertha Bakata who is also Board Chair of SONARA, explained that the students were internally displaced from their native land by the ongoing crisis in the region. In spite of that difficulty, they did exceptionally well in GCE results, thereby attracting the attention of the BBW for the scholarship. “Looking at the situation with the crisis, we thought we should encourage the Bakundu girl child. We are actually sponsoring 10 Bakundu girls through the high school and University. And we shall see them through these years,” she clarified. Ndoh Bertha added that BBW is creating a chain so that when they are retired, the girls will take over from them and sponsor others.
One of the beneficiaries, Masoma lya, who passed 10 Ordinary Level papers in CCAST Kumba expressed gratitude to BBW on behalf of her peers. She promised that they would continue to do better in education in their various schools. Chief Ndoh Obase of Kakei brought royal blessings unto the beneficiaries and the didactic materials. He cautioned parents of the recipients that the money be used only for the intended purpose.
South West Regional Delegate for Women Empowerment and the Family, Panje nee Bery Itoh, told the students to take t heir studies seriously for they (beneficiaries) shall be their parents’ walking sticks in their old age. She highlighted how education can open doors in every instance. The event at the South West Regional Delegation of Women Empowerment and the Family on August 24, 2019, in Buea was attended among others by Hon. Martin Atinda Mboni of Membe West Constituency.
