Santa Sub-division is said to have been one of the last municipalities to have been bruised by the separatist fighters since the outbreak of the Anglophone crisis. This is probably due to the fact that as gateway to the volatile North West Region, the sub-division is well protected security-wise. But observers attribute the status of a safe haven for Santa more to the saying that "peace is best nurtured under peace loving administrators". It is partly due to the level-headedness of Santaa DO, Viang Mekala, that the division remains impregnable to the separatist fighters.
In recognition of the peace given them by Viang Mekala, some youths of the Santa municipality rallied to decorate him in traditional regalia. Describing him as the peace brain, the satisfied youths under one of their section presidents of the YCPDM used the occasion of the 1st edition of the Santa Peace and Unity tournament to express their satisfaction to a man whom they described as wise and level headed.
To Viang Mekala the decoration is of great significance. "I am very happy...today I have been adopted by the people of Santa meaning I have become an indigene of the place". He interpreted the gesture as an indication that "the people are happy with my managerial skills".
“I therefore salute their initiative and further let them know I am a man of peace and I expect them to live in peace, because with peace we can achieve all things and without peace nothing can be achieved".
It should be recalled that 11th February and 20th May celebrations for 2 out of the 3 years of the crisis in Santa were often saluted with impressive turnouts despite threats from separatists. Even though 2019 was perturbed, Viang still braved the odds amidst other related intricacies to champion and preside over the 20th May activities which saw the handing over of medals to meritorious workers of the nation.
