Authorities ban peace initiative to end violence in NW and SW.

The government of Cameroon appears to dread any initiative coming from the civil society and political parties intended to arrest the crises rocking the country. Probably bent on taking credit for anything that becomes a game-changer, administrative authorities are instructed officiously to put speed brakes on well-meaning crusades. It is believed that it was the same motivation that that led authorities in Douala to ban a press conference geared towards the launch of a Grand Peace Conference. Jean Jacques Ekindi who had secured authorization from the Divisional Officer of Douala I was told that he couldn’t proceed with the meeting, Thursday.

Ekindi arrived the Salle de Fete venue of his press conference disappointed after making rounds to the Douala I Sub-Divisional Office, the Wouri SDO and the Governor to find out why the venue was closed despite paying for the place and fulfilling the necessary formalities.

He told reporters, “Yesterday, they told us the room was not available. But we didn’t know why. We moved to he Governor, Prefect and Sub prefect but got no news. I can however confirm that the sub-prefect gave authorization. But we can not hold this meeting out of the hall.”

The Progressive Movement leader apologized to all who turned out for the meeting especially those who braved the odds from the North West and South West regions.

Despite the setback, Ekindi has vowed that, the peace crusade must continue especially at a time when school resumption in the restive English-speaking regions remains a dicey issue.

Thursday’s abortive press conference was to officially launch a Grand Peace Conference grouping religious authorities, traditional rulers, political and civil society actors, the press, and others to pray and preach peace in the troubled North West and South West region.

Inspired by Christian Cardinal Tumi, both men believe that only an end to violence can bring lasting peace to the country. They have repeatedly claimed that talking time is over and the time for action is now.

At the time of the banned press conference, the vocal cleric led a delegation of 13 religious authorities to present their peace initiative to the Prime Minister.
