Kamto’s supporters sentenced for Kondengui riots.
The campaign to send Prof. Maurice Kamto into the political wilderness seems to have begun. Supporters of his MRC party are already paying a bitter price for his bravery to confront the system head-on. At least five of them arrested in connection with the Kondengui prison riots of last month have been sentenced. The Magistrate’s Court in Ekounou, Yaounde on Wednesday August 28, slammed the five accused to a three-year sentence each as despite protests from their lawyers, report Journal du Cameroon.
The five; Mutagha Sylvanus, Yemga Serge Thomas, Wafo Jasmin, Chatchua Christophe and Siewe Wilfried, are the first persons to be sentenced in connection with the Kondengui prison riots of July 22.
The hearing of other suspects, including some Anglophone detainees, will continue in the days ahead. Last week, Mancho Bibixy and some other Anglophone detainees appeared in court for the first time to answer charges brought before them in connection with the prison riots.
They are accused of destruction of property, looting and attempt to escape from jail.
