Outrage as gov’t snubs tradi-practitioners on celebration of their day!
Cameroon government’s neglect of traditional medicine came to the fore last Saturday when the ministry of health granted no hall for the celebration of the 17th African Day for Traditional Medicine. Traditional practitioners were constrained to do their celebration at the Yaounde head office of PROMETRA, the association of African traditional practitioners headed by Dr Fai Fomiyen Nguh Edward.
The snob for the men who treat 80 percent of pathologies was stretched when the health ministry sent no representative to the celebration even as an invitation was extended to service concerned.
Speaking at a press conference, the college of seasoned traditional doctors charged with organizing the celebration took turns to lambaste government for neglecting a corps that accounts for treatment of 80 percent of pathologies.
Dr Fai Fominyen and his colleagues reminded government that they were breaking international conventions prescribed by the WHO on the importance of traditional medicine. They bemoaned that there was no law regulating the practice of the profession in Cameroon.
Commenting on government neglect of the corps, Fominyen said government had a duty as prescribed by WHO to champion the cause of traditional medicine and give them financial assistance. He said there was supposed to be a budget for traditional medicine since it has a service head.
Fominyen was at a loss to understand why the chief of service who participated at the seminar was not present for the official celebration of the day or did not organize for a hall to be granted them for the celebration.
For Dr Dewah, the lack of recognition and respect from government, was partly because tradi-practitioners had not organized themselves into a federation. He expressed regret that the common man who is their target was unable to have access to their products because of the high cost provoked by lack of subsidies from government.
For his part, Dr Essomba who is secretary general of the association of tradi-practitioners assured journalist that they were working towards identification of members and encouraging them to specialize.
