CIMEC 2019 will transform Cameroon from a geological scandal to a field of activity and mining activities – Dr Fuh Calistus Gentry, SS for MINMIDT.
Yaounde will up to tomorrow be the world’s mining capital. Over 1000 exhibitors, delegates, national and international panelists, including experts in related activities in the mining sector such as lawyers, economists, bankers, insurance companies, environmentalists, universities have since Monday 2nd September been exploring new mining opportunities in Cameroon.
Investors in the mining sector will be presented results of airborne geophysical surveys carried out by PRECASEM over a five-year period for a total of approximately sixty million US dollars, about 34,803,000,000 FCFA with the World Bank, a press release from the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development (MINMIDT) indicated.
Ahead of the opening of the conference, H.E. Dr Fuh Calistus Gentry, Secretary of State for MINMIDT sounded quite upbeat. He told the press that CIMEC 2019 would “transform Cameroon from a geological scandal to a field of activity and mining activities.”
A few days to the opening of the third edition of the Cameroon International Investment Mining and Exhibition Conference (CIMEC), companies already carrying out activities in Cameroon shared their experiences with journalists and demonstrated their financial wherewithal to develop mining operations.
Speaking at the press briefing, Dodo Ndoke, MINMIDT boss, said it was an exchange with partners and not a press conference.
Representatives of CAMALCO, ERAMET, CAMINCO, companies already operating in Cameroon explained their activities to press men and expressed their determination to take advantage of the new mining occurrences.
André-Victorin Atangana, Country Manager for ERAMET, a French company, boasted that they had the capacity to go from feasibility studies up to exploration and industrialization phases. He said the experience shown by their company in countries like Gabon and New Caledonia where they are into mining manganese, silicon and mineralized sand can be extended to Cameroon.
For its part, James Castieu, Project Director of CAMALCO, explained that it was still undertaking feasibility studies and would determine the amount of money to pump into its mining project only at the end of studies. The company, he said, intended to become a citizen company by empowering the community to be involved in modern agriculture.
Meanwhile, CAMINCO which prides itself as an old hand in Cameroon concerning gold mining announced it had already invested 50 million dollars in their project.
All the companies promised to transfer technology to Cameroon while embarking on mining operations.
Following is Dr. FUh Calistus Gentry’s assessment of Cameroon’s readiness for the conference:
Is Cameroon ready for the international conference on mining?
Yes, very ready. What you saw here today are just sponsors for the event. We have numerous participants. We have participants from England, Canada, France etc. We want to make Cameroon a place for negotiating mining finance. We also have participants from Central Africa and other governments. We want to showcase the new discoveries and we believe that from now we want to transform Cameroon from this geological scandal to a field of activity and mining activities.
Certainly many people will be coming to look at the new opportunities. Those who are here have got projects going already Cameroon. We have a high-level British delegation; people who taken an interest in the new discoveries. Many Cameroonians should also come and see and interact. There is also an economic and scientific colloquium which will allow Cameroonian scientists to make this a reality that these 300 new mining occurrences are genuine. And it will give a new impetus for mining in Cameroon and central Africa as a whole.
