"Shabby" school resumption in NW; Bamenda 1 D.O takes bull by horn as governor is absent.

The one-month sensitisation campaign carried out by North west elite for effective schools resumption failed to produce the desired effects, at least on Day One. There was conspicuous absence of pupils in the primary and secondary schools around the Bamenda 1,2 and 3 municipalities.

Considered as the “Etoudi”of the North West, even the popular Upstation area that harbours most administrative structures and military as well as security units unexpectedly saw a scanty turnout of pupils yesterday.

As tradition demands, NW Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique who was before now been the brain behind school resumption by effectively touring 6 out of 7 division, chickened out of the back-to-school tour at the eleventh hour.

Bamenda 1 D.O takes bull by horn

With the necessity of ensuring and ascertaining an effective school resumption, Gilbert Guibaii Baldena, D.O Bamenda 1, toured some a schools around his municipality where shocking and discouraging results emanated from a residential area which contrarily harbours 1/4 of Bamenda's 'bourgeosie" class. At the Ecole Primaire les Champion, on a total expected number of 540 students just 50 turned out evenly represented by 25 boys and 25 girls. Mrs Tamachambi Regina admits to this figures 7 on a scale of 15 teachers responded present with all being females. She added "prior to the D.O’s visit the children have studied mathematics, English and environmental education".

She said: “I am surprised and impressed with the turn-out because same activity last year saw about 2 which I must say is rather encouraging.”

At the G.S army camp, of 380 pupils expected, just 14 made the rough road smooth with 15 teachers present on a scale of 19. Class CE2 recorded the most in terms of attendance as 6 pupils responded present. The head teacher hinted to The Horizon: "With the poor turnout the teachers just had to open their lesson books and revise with the children in the best way they could".

For the government secondary schools just GBHS Bamendankwe opened its doors with others completely shut in Bamenda. Here shocking statistics characterised the day 1 resumption. A total of 18 students (10 boys and 8 girls) responded present in a knowledge-grabbing quest. It should be noted 24 administrative and 46 teaching staff were expected but sadly enough 3 school administrators responded with 4 teaching staff giving a percentage presence of 12.5% and 08.6% respectively with an overall 10?fective presence.

On the understanding therefore that the students were on a quest for knowledge it was further imperative to be briefed on the lessons taught.The Horizon gathered 4 lessons taught on a total of 76 originally planned with a 05.6% overall percentage taught. To Gilbert Guibaii Baldena the turn-out is encouraging though timid."Their presence in school on day 1 is encouraging owing to the presence of the teachers who are indeed ready to carry out their respective roles. I therefore seize this opportunity to remind and urge the parents to shun fear and send the children to school because government has taken all necessary measures to ensure not just their security but an apt concise and effective school resumption. “
