South West: Military steps in to boost education.
The 21stMotorised Infantry Brigade (BRIM) headquartered in Buea has joined the living forces of the South West Region to encouraged pupils and students to return to their classrooms. The soldiers are using fliers to encourage pupils and student on the values of education which are being distributed throughout the South West Region. “Choosing education is choosing development and, peace and maintenance. It is a celebration of life,” one of the messages read. Another message indicated that supporting the defence forces, children will be able to go back to school, economic activities will be preserved, free movement could be guaranteed, development prospects could be envisaged for communities and for the region and the country Cameroon.
Colonel Ba’ana Tsogo Jacques Alain, Chief of staff of the 21stMotorised Infantry Brigade, made it clear that all security dispositions have been taken throughout the region for effective teaching and learning to go on hitch-free. He cited a security meeting held in Yaounde to that effect where instructions were given to them on how to work. “Teachers, pupils and students should be sure about their security. But know that everybody has to be involved in security. If anybody finds anything abnormal, don’t hesitate to bring us the information so that we can handle it,” he explained, while soliciting the cooperation of the population to help them do their job better.
On having the military in communities, he explained that the presence of the military is to uphold Statehood. That they provide security so that business can flourish, students can go to school etc. Those community members should be reassured of protection and should go about their daily activities unworried. He reechoed that they are not in the region to fight the population but to protect them. “You are safer when the military is near you,” he affirmed.

Our role is to reassure the population. We understand that because of the violence that has been going on, due to the terrorists, people have been scared because they do not know where the bullet is coming from. We are the military. We are the institution and the institution is here for the population. Don’t run away when you see the military. The military is not here to fight the population but they are here to protect the population. You are safer when the military is near you.”
