Civilo-Military action pays off: 30 Young firemen complete course.

Some 30 children within the ages of 7-15 have completed a one-month training on first hand first aid treatment, the endowments of a first aid box and how to turn off a gas bottle in case of fire. Holding at the army rescue unit the commander of the 51st fire fighting region underscored the importance of the exercise which is in its 3rd year."The objective of this training is to cultivate moral and civic behavior among children because the fire fighters corps is a sacrificial one where in you give your self out to ensure the society is satisfied, occupy children during holidays, instill respect for one another, cultivate altruism and living together. I am therefore urging these children to be the first step of our job by saving any victim they come across be it in school or in society. This year we received 30 contrary to 19 of last year which is remarkable and hope for better as the number is not commensurate to the activity carried out. We therefore hope with a stabilisation of the security situation in our region a remarkable increase will be attained."

Sitting in for NW Governor, Mr Ngome Kome, Inspector General at the North West Governor’s office, lauded the efforts put in while regretting the outbreak of the ongoing Anglophone crisis has since dampened the atmosphere that usually marks the event. He further insisted lessons on the fire extinction and first aid are almost as vital as human living because in case of an uprising where ever the case may be the child becomes the master of the scene. He thus urged the children to be good will ambassadors and sell the image of the fire fighting unit whose role in curbing incidental as well as accidental occurrences remain of great note.

Taku Paul, chief of center of the unit, insisted though the work was smooth they faced difficulties along the road. To him "on ghost town days owing to the advent of the crisis the turn out is timid and at times completely grounded. Painful enough on such days we have to go an extra mile to transport these children to their various homes with some even boycotting".

Quizzed on the tense civilo-military relationship owing to the crisis, Taku Paul insisted "the parents really want their children to be part of this exercise as often as possible. They came out today in their numbers to see their children demonstrate these tactics, some covering miles on foot from Azire (about 2 km) away from here just to see for themselves. We thus taught them the first aid box, fire quenching and significantly how to receive a call on phone".

Young fire woman, Fanso Vernyuy in her second year admits: "I have learnt so much.... and incase of an uprising in my society I know I will call the 118 for rescue and also in a health emergency I will place the patient on a lateral recovery position".

Young Fireman Ndangoh Brian and commander of the children’s squad noted: "I am so happy to be here because so many others could not make it. In case of a choke, unconsciousness and others, I now master a quick intervention plan before waiting for the ambulance. This will help me because before the fire extinguisher or fighters come I can be able to either turn off the fire, rescue victims or call in case they haven't been informed".
