The lockdown imposed on metropolitan Bamenda did not prevent inhabitants from listening with keen interest to the September 10, 2019 message of the Head of State, Paul Biya. Expectations were high ahead of the TV/radio message with fasting and special prayers in some gatherings for God to lead the Head of State to deliver a message that inspires hope especially for the people and regions frustrated by three years of the socio-political and security crisis that have not helped matters.
The message is now history and many in the quarters of Bamenda and neighbourhoods think that it was President Biya’s best speech in recent times because of its straightforward nature. It is more so because the President announced the long-awaited dialogue in a 30-minute speech, which featured the Anglophone crisis as the topical issue. Some expressed satisfaction because the Head of State showcased humility as he condoled with victims of the crisis and acknowledged some imperfections in the management of challenges staring the nation on the face. The speech was straight to the point, pragmatic and brought hope to many because it identified and stressed the wrong doing of some war mongers.
The highly critical inhabitants of the North West Region acknowledged that President Biya had once again demonstrated that he was the key to dialogue towards a return to normalcy in the North West and South West Regions. But not before arguments by proponents of independence for the North West and South West regions that the Head of State’s message is not welcome. Come what may; the speech opened a new chapter for solutions towards a return to normalcy with North West Governor, Adolphe Lele Lafrique, mobilizing inhabitants to get set with suggestions to feature on the dialogue table. The Governor watched and listened to the speech in his Bamenda Up Station residence in the company of Mezam SDO, and some Regional Defence and Security bosses.
