Obituary: Major-General Tataw laid to rest.
Major General James Tabe Tataw who died on July 24, 2019 in France was buried last Saturday in his native Ossing village, where he was traditional ruler.
A day earlier, Major-General Tataw who died at the age of 86 was on Friday September 20, 2019 given a military funeral ceremony at the Headquarters Brigade in Yaounde.
His last journey began with the arrival of his corpse at the Yaounde Nsimalen international airport on September 17, 2019 where it was received by the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo and other officials. A brief airport funeral service was organized and officiated at by Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Ayambod before transferring the mortal remains to the Yaounde General Hospital mortuary.
Drawing inspiration from Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, Rev. Prof. Ayambod in his sermon after describing the fallen General as a great statesman who served the nation and humanity faithfully said he (General Tataw James) is not dead but rather asleep in the Lord. “From our human judgments as Christians, death is only a process, a journey to eternal life and a change of geographical location. In our traditional setting and as the traditional ruler he was, a chief never dies but only travels to bless the road for those to come after him,” he stated. The man of God said he knows General Tataw is resting in the bosom of the Lord, noting that he devoted his time and resources in building the church, helping the poor and always used his wisdom in bringing sanity in the church.
At the coffining ceremony which took place at the Yaounde General Hospital mortuary on September 19, 2019, the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo led the military and other government officials to pay their last respects to the fallen Army General of the second section who served the nation in several capacities.
In a brief funeral service held at the chapel of the mortuary, the officiating pastor consoled the bereaved family in his sermon, reminding everyone that death is inevitable in this mortal world. “He is asleep in Jesus Christ,” the man of God assured, adding that as the Christian the fallen Major-General read and practiced the word of God especially as a member of the Christian Men Fellowship of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC).
The different eulogies written about the deceased Army General cum chief of Ossing portrayed him as disciplined man. The Moderator Emeritus of PCC, Rev. Dr. Festus Asana in his eulogy described General Tataw as a simple man who had a precise military style. “As a member of the Christian Men Fellowship, in his simple uniform he identified with Jesus’ followers fishing out men for Christ. I have always been carried by his impeccable English and always precise military style. There are many instances in which General Tataw made a great impact on me. In his home, the simplicity and hospitality was always evident. The legacy goes on,” partly reads his eulogy.
Born on September 5, 1933 at Ossing village, Eyumojock Subdivision of Manyu Division in the South West Region, General Tataw James was since September 2001 promoted to the rank of Major General within the Cameroonian army.
