Government’s Humanitarian Action.

Over 4,000 more IDPs receive aid in Bafoussam

Some 4,000 internally displaced persons feeing from violence in the North West and South West Regions and taking refuge in the West Region have received aid materials from the government. The IDPs, majority of them from the North West Region, received the relief items on Wednesday September 18, 2019 from the hands of the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji. They add to thousand others who had last month benefited from a similar assistance in Bafoussam.

According to officials of the department of Civil Protection in the Ministry of Territorial Administration, the items given to the IDPs are of basic necessity and were chosen by themselves. They consist among others of: beds, blankets, rice, cooking oil, sugar, laundry soap, canned food and toiletries. Each of the beneficiaries left the ceremonial ground of Government High School Bafoussam with a complete set of items, in addition to cash to ease transportation.

While addressing the beneficiary IDPs and the population of the city of Bafoussam, which turned out en masse to witness the donation exercise despite a timid downpour, Minister Atanga Nji reassured the displaced persons that government is working relentlessly to restore the restive regions to normalcy and to ensure the return of IDPs to their homes. He noted that hope was in the horizon, especially with the announced Major National Dialogue rolled out by President Paul Biya. “I share in your plight and that is why I kept to my promise of coming back with more assistance after that of three weeks ago,” the Minister said. Minister Atanga Nji lauded the population of Bafoussam for opening up to IDPs and for peacefully co-existing. He said it was a shining example of the harmonious living together preached from the helm of the State. The Territorial Administration Minister called on officials of pubic primary and secondary schools in the region to give admission priority to internally displaced school kids. He insisted that such children should be allowed to study for free as instructed by the Head of state.

Tegha Gideon Ebua, one of the beneficiaries who gave a vote of thanks on behalf of all other IDPs, appreciated the gesture initiated by President Paul Biya. He said some of them are living peacefully in Bafoussam but hope to return home after the dialogue. Tegha was consistent in his declaration that Cameroon should remain one and indivisible.
