Some portions of roads in Bamenda are getting a facelift following the intervention of the military. Craters that had developed in sections of Ngen junction through Sonac Street to city Chemist and Ayaba Street were filled with wheel-barrowfuls of gravel deposited by the military.
Soldiers of the 5th joint military sector in Bamenda recently deployed a 4 foot caterpillar, an 80 ton truck to throw 3rd grade cracked stones on the potholes of worn out roads.
The Horizon understood the essence of the civilo-military gesture is geared towards maintaining and improving livelihood in a bid to ensure loyalty to the state under whose arms the elements owe allegiance. Before now the poor state of the roads led to the tearing of car and motorcycle tyres, bursting and damaging of wheel drums. Worse still, with the break out of the Anglophone crisis road maintenance works have been partially or completely shut down with relatively less work recorded and more stress heralded. On impromptu shutdowns, many have become stranded and compelled to undergo their challenging journey by foot as commercial bikes dread circulating in such localities in a bid to avoid damages. There has been a temporary sigh of relief as the Amour Mezam, Mile II, Mrs Ngen stretch of roads of the Bamenda 3 municipality and the Sonac street and Ayaba streets of the Bamenda II municipality received a face-lift.
City dwellers hold the gesture is timely and impressive, though insisting the non use of compactors and others may leave them worst in the months ahead. They are disappointed with City Council delegate, Ndumu Vincent, one-time regional delegate of public works, for not being pro-active in this respect.
