Emergency Humanitarian Assistance: Ensuring that aid gets to the right people (Photo of Minister Paul Atanga Nji).
The Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji, on June 05, 2019 in Buea South West Region, commissioned the centre for the Coordination of Emergency Humanitarian Assistance alongside its members. Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai is the Regional Focal Point for the centre. The Minister said government’s objective is to ensure that assistance offered to local and international partners gets to the right people. He explained that combatants who have not yet handed themselves in for the disarmament programme are not entitled to such aid. According to him, government wants to work hand in glove with partners to ensure greter accountability, traceability and synergy in aid distribution. He commended aid agencies and the United Nations System for the assistance so far offered to Cameroonians. On the spot, Paul Atanga Nji distributed copies of the Prime Minister’s edict setting up the centres in the North West and South West Regions and guidelines on aid distribution to humanitarian staff. For his part, Governor Okalia Bilai said the advent of the centre would ease work for all partners, urging them to collaborate with the authorities. Meanwhile, the Buea Centre is located in Buea Town. The refurbished building, which belonged to Buea Council, has five offices and is equipped with computers, printers, and a brand new pickup van offered by the government. Its data base of all humanitarian assistance offered in the Region will be automatically shared with the central office in the Ministry Territorial Administration and other stakeholders. The Centre is responsible for coordinating all assistance to victims of crisis in the South West Region, especially internally-displaced persons. Also included are injured, maimed, handicapped, orphaned and victims of destruction of property, host communities and Cameroonian refugees.
