The benefits of the emergency humanitarian plan launched by government to rescue internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of the Anglophone crisis are increasingly be felt in Bamenda.
Some 500 IDPs who were duly registered last week received gifts such as mattresses, blankets, cubes of savon, litres of cooking oil at a ceremony that took place at the esplanade of the North West Governor’s office.
While addressing the beneficiaries, Songa Rene Pierre Senior Administrative officer and SDO for Mezam, reninded the displaced persons that the gift is in line with government’s move in resolving the crisis. He further insisted the gesture which is coming just two days to the start of a national dialogue an expression of the head of state’s unflinching desire to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
Tikof Christina, a displaced lady and disabled on one leg, expressed thanks at the symbolic gesture. The lady who is reported to be squatting in a home with 8 persons at New Lay-out quarter in Bamenda insisted in local pidgin English: "i di suffer plenty, chop sef fo chop no dey, now i get one foot and blood no di circulate for my foot fine fine. Pikin them now no di go school and i bad sey because we no know when this matter go end".
She said she would love to return to her village but regretted she dis not know the whereabouts of those who used to help her. He therefore pleaded with government to “help me in both medical as well as personal bills".
Another who spoke on condition anonymity quipped: "I am tired of the pains and stress. All I want now is peace, peace and peace. At home we wake up in gun shots and caught by this confusion and in this web we know nowhere to go nor what to do. Thank GOD we could still be alive. We hope that peace speedily returns.
While this government initiative continues to make headline news, it should be noted over 4000 IDPs have since registered but attest to have not received any aid. Only 500 benefitted from Saturday’s distribution exercise. The rest were assured measures had been taken to satisfy the demands of all those registered.
