UBa lecturers announce strike.
Lecturers of the University of Bamenda (UBa) are spoiling for an industrial action over the non-payment of their internal allowances from 2016 to 2018. They have given notice for a sit down strike from 18 to 20 June if their demands are not met within 10 days.
Prof. Micheal Kpughe Lang, President of the UBa section of SYNES, the higher education teachers’ syndicate, addressed the strike notice to Prof. Therese Nkuo Akenji, Vice Chancellor of UBa, on 6 June, at the end of an executive committee meeting of the trade union.
While congratulating the UBa VC and her team on the brilliant performance during the recent University Games hosted by the University of Dschang, it noted with dissatisfaction the non-payment of most internal allowances (2016-2018).
The executive committee announced that it had empowered its president to “notify management of an impending industrial action if these overdue allowances are not paid within a period of ten (10) days, beginning from today – 6th of June 2019”.
The communiqué signed by Prof. Micheal Kpughe invited “lecturers of UBa to observe a 3-day industrial action renewable, beginning from the 18th of June 2019, in the event of non-compliance to this gentle strike notice.”
“The strike will be marked by cessation of all academic activities: teaching, tutorials, supervision, marking of scripts, exam juries, defences, and assessments”, it concluded.
A member of SYNES UBa who spoke to The Horizon on condition of anonymity said the UBa VC would be forced to cough up the overdue arrears if she has diverted the funds to other projects or move to Yaounde to lobby for them from treasury officials if they are blocked in an account.
