Witch-hunting in Kumba: Designer cum activist goes underground for fear of reprisals.
From Abendong P. Hertz in Kumba.
Reports in Kumba, chief town of Meme Division, say a Kumba-based designer whose name we got as Oumarou Mohammed is seriously being wanted by security operatives in the South West Region - Cameroon.
The Muslim, alongside other diehard activists of the Southern Cameroons self declared state of 'Ambazonia' , are said to be on the run after they were hinted a security swoop on them in the City of Kumba was imminent. The activists were finalizing plans to stage a protest march to press for the release of some of their self-declared leaders who were arrested in Nigeria and extradited to Yaounde. The said leaders have been in detention at the dreaded Kondengui Central Prison for over 20 months now and were recently handed life-jail sentences.
A dependable source within the separatist movement in Kumba, who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity said it was in early March 2019 when the escapee activists intensified plans to stage a public demonstration on the streets of Buea. Quoting one of the escapee activists, the source noted that it was a concerned security officer, understanding that they (Ambazonia activists) are fighting for a legitimate cause, who leaked the information of the activists’ impending arrest.
The ultimate search for Oumarou for subsequent arrest is being perpetrated by top government officials of the 37-year-old Biya regime and the local police officers are merely executing instructions from hierarchy, investigations have shown.
Family sources told this reporter that the remaining siblings, friends and relatives of Oumarou, 23, have been so psychologically traumatized ever since his disappearance, supposedly in April 2019 when he was last seen.
As at now, the whereabouts of the 23-year-old remains unknown and all efforts made at getting to his family members and friends for comments were futile.
'Ambazonia' is a movement that seeks the sovereignty of Southern Cameroons from La Republique du Cameroun. And over the years, many activists have suffered undue arrest, torture and imprisonment, for a fight against assimilation.
Case that orchestrated Oumarou's escape
The 23 -year-old designer who learnt the trade from his parents after elementary school in Kumba, has slowly grown to be a man in the job.
When the crisis got to it peak, Oumarou was lured by friends and fellow designers to start designing special T-shirts for activists who would in turn use them to demonstrate.
After realising that the path he is treading is a rocky one given that he works at the 'heart' of the Kumba main market, Oumarou fled for dear life. He and fellow designers were since put on the radar of security operatives for the misdemeanour.
