What is your take on the resolution to give special status to the Anglophone regions?
I was rapporteur in that committee. We crafted the documents and so I know the content. I know what is going to benefit the people of the NW and SW. It is two facets; Firstly they want to rebuild the poor and deplorable economic situation in their councils.. Remember for more than three years , the councils have not been able to recover taxes, so they need to revamp the economic activities of these councils and in the course of the 2020 budget, special funds will be allocated to councils in the two regions. This will be in the form of consideration just like the Douala and Yaounde city councils as enshrined in article 62 of the constitution.
Will the governors of these two regions, for example, be elected in this special status arrangement?
No you got it all wrong. We are demanding that the state should decentralize or devolve competences to local authorities. The state cannot inject money in local authorities without putting an eye on how money is used. We need some state authorities to ensure that the money is used judiciously as the state will want. Because elected officials will not be answerable directly to the state authorities, they have a responsibility with the electorate, while the state’s representative has the responsibility to report to hierarchy in the central government.
