The two legal systems should run parallel- Hon. Joseph Mbah Ndam, member of judicial affairs committee.

Our committee was a very important one. Debates were frank and decisions were taken on a consensual basis.  This crisis started first with the lawyers before the teachers joined. The committee was made largely of lawyers. Their contributions have been taken note of. All of us have been looking towards one direction. We thought that the two legal systems should prosper, evolve side by side. We discovered the issue of harmonization was resulting in assimilation.

Do you hope for a promising future for practicing lawyers, especially those of the common law system?

I happen to be a child of two cities. Those of us who studied in the then University of Yaounde are peculiar in the sense that we are versed in both systems. If we begin to look only at our own system, we may miss out a lot vis-a- vis those immersed in both systems. So I have always addressed my mind to the fact that the two systems should operate in parallel. This means that our Supreme Court should create a small chamber for the common law. We have expatiated on that and we think that if we do that it will be healthy for Cameroon.
