The granting of special status for NW&SW; release of 333 Anglophone detainees; freedom order for detained Maurice Kamto and co constitute confidence-building measures for return of peace and holding of elections in February 2020
President Paul Biya has used one stone to shoot two birds. At the end of last week’s Major National Dialogue (MND) he sought to resolve both the Anglophone crisis and the post-electoral crisis sparked by the contestation of his victory by Maurice Kamto’s MRC by discontinuing proceedings against 333 Anglophone detainees and 102 detained MRC militants.
Consequently the gates of prisons in Bamenda, Douala and Yaounde were flung open last Friday and Saturday so that those benefitting from the president’s act of magnanimity should walk to freedom.
The freedom of these Cameroonians was celebrated by their families. But it was the unexpected release of Kamto and co that created a lot of movement. Streets of Yaounde from the Kondengui prison to the Military Court were jammed to capacity by supporters of the MRC leaders chanting victory songs.
Prior to the release of Anglophone detainees, the MND had taken major resolutions to pacify Anglophones and permit a return to normalcy in the North West and South West regions. The most outstanding was the granting of a special status for these two regions as contained in Article 62 of the Constitution. That article has lent itself to several interpretations, but it is now incumbent of the President and his advisers to define it.
Observers say the MND has provided the dress rehearsal for a return of peace in Cameroon so that elections could hold in February 2020 as planned. Hopes for effective schools resumption in the North West and South West regions are now high.
