Special status debate: SDF recommends Quebec-style autonomy for NW&SW.
Drawing from a resolution of the just-ended Major National Dialogue (MND) granting special status to the Anglophone regions, the SDF which participated attentively at the forum with its deputy national president heading the bilingualism committee has recommended the Quebec model of autonomy.
In a press release issued on 6th October and signed by the SDF Chairman, John Fru Ndi, the party said it was inclined to the Canadian model whereby Quebec which is one of 13 provinces “is vested with the attributes of statehood like a Premier and a Government as well as a distinct administrative system”.
Noting that there are many Autonomous Territories in the world which are imbued with special status, the SDF said “the Quebec model appeals more to Cameroon by virtue of a similar heritage”.
The SDF also called for the re-instatement of the House of Chiefs and restoration of elected governance across the politico-administrative machinery.
There have been so far various interpretations of the special status resolution but only the head of state and his advisers can define or give teeth to it.
