Kamto and co released without court hearing!
The first hearing on the case of Maurice Kamto and supporters charged with rebellion and hostility against the state scheduled for 8 October, which was supposed to mark the first anniversary of last year’s presidential election, wll not hold again.
President Paul Biya last Friday ordered discontinuance of the case which concerns 102 militants of the MRC party.
Although Saturday (October 5) was not a working day at the Yaounde Military Tribunal, the court was forced to briefly open so as to execute the instruction of President Biya to release the leader of CRM and others.
Hundreds of MRC militants jammed the Yaounde Military Tribunal to celebrate the release of their leader, Prof Kamto, and others.
Meanwhile it is worth noting that the 1st Vice National President of MRC, Mamadou Mota, has not been released, because he was slammed a two year jail term by a Yaounde Court, following the recent uprising at the Kondengui Prison, when there was much material damages. The authorities claimed that Mota instigated the riot. A charge he strongly denied.
Addressing militants who had thronged his Santa Barbara residence in Yaounde last Saturday, Kamto thanked them for maintaining their ardour and support one year after the historic presidential election that saw the emergence of the MRC. He said the struggle for human rights in Cameroon and liberation of the people would continue. His close aides like Celestin Djamen, Paul Eric Kingue and Prof. Fogue showed the same determination in their words.
Reacting to the release of Maurice Kamto and several detainees, Amnesty International said in a release that it must signal end of repression of dissenting voices
“At last Kamto, his supporters, eight youths arrested for a Facebook live and many others arbitrarily detained for months have the opportunity to reunite with their families and loved ones. But now the authorities should go further by releasing all other individuals arbitrarily detained for having exercised their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and set up clear steps to protect and respect human rights,” AI noted.
