The United Nations Population Fund in Cameroon represented by Sitti Oussein this year supported the Ministry of Social Affairs (MINAS) in celebrating the international day for the elderly persons which is commemorated on October 1.
The activities organised by the Ministry of Social Affairs and her partners to mark the day were full of splendour as elderly persons were celebrated by MINAS and her partners.
“This population is growing so we need to consider that they have specific needs that need to be taken care of”, said the Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Siti Oussein.
To support the elderly persons, MINAS and their partners offered gifts to the elderly. Worth noting were the gifts from the United Nations Population Fund which were presented by Sitti Oussein, Cameroon’s UNPF representative.
“This is the first time the United Nations Population Fund is supporting us. They came in because we needed some hygienic things for the homes of the elderly and they came in at short notice and did beyond that”, said Angelica Bih Mundi, the Director at the Ministry of Social Affairs in Charge of persons living with disabilities, as she lauded the kind gesture of Mrs Sitta Oussein.
The gifts from the UNPF which included toiletries, bathing towels, diapers, kitchen gloves, combs, t-shirts, face caps and some others brought joy to the many elderly persons who answered present and even thereafter when some others were dispatched to suit the needs of the internally displaced elderly persons.
Mrs Sitta Oussein also made the same kind gesture after October 1, 2019 celebrations by taking some gifts to the house of the elderly in Akono. All these made their participation as partners this year felt by the Ministry of Social Affairs.
The MINAS Director, Mrs Mundi, said she was so happy with the participation of UNPF and considered them so special because irrespective of the fact that they were signaled at short notice, they still deemed it necessary to be part and parcel of the celebrations.
“The gifts that they offered to the elderly IDPs, we equally shared to some old people who were not internally displaced but elderly people whom we saw needed assistance and are vulnerable too”, she added.
Old people, for their part, did not fail to thank MINAS officials and the efforts of the Director, Mrs Mundi who remembered them in a special way. They urged the stakeholders to continue to remember them especially at this needy age in life.
