Australian company announces upgrade on bauxite project in Cameroon.
The Cameroon subsidiary of Australia’s Canyon Resources company, CAMALCO, has announced major updates on its bauxite exploration and exploitation project in the Adamawa Region of the country. The Chief Executive of CAMALCO, Philip Gallagher, said in a statement recently that there has been a 62% increase in total number of tonnes and an 850% increase of the indicated resources component of the bauxite project being carried out in the Minim-Martap area of Adamawa Region. “Increasing the Minim-Martap resource to nearly 900 million tonnes of high-grade, low-contaminant bauxite consolidates the Minim-Martap project as a Tier 1 asset for bauxite …,” the Canyon Resources Managing Director, Gallagher, said. “The Minim-Martap project is now one of, if not, the largest Guinea-style high-grade, low-contaminant bauxite deposit located outside of Guinea with accessible and operating infrastructure including an existing rail and two potential port options…,” he added. CAMALCO is one of several foreign outfits interested in exploring and developing Cameroon’s subsoil wealth. The company took active part in the international mining investment and exhibition conference that took place early last month in Yaounde, organized by the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development. The company, which was given three bauxite exploration licences by government in July last year, is currently carrying out pre-feasibility studies that will evaluate the technical implementation and commercial solutions for the monetization of the bauxite project. “Our company, CAMALCO, is working on the Minim-Martap bauxite project in Cameroon. We are in the process of building a rail line. From there, we’ll start defining the results as per the standards required by the World Bank. We are now in the feasibility studies phase. We are working on the geo-techniques, the mining techniques, the rail line and infrastructure. Stage two of our project is about constructing a refinery in Cameroon,” Gallagher had told the press on the sidelines of the international mining conference.
