Boko Haram: UNDP, partners launch project to stabilize communities in North, Far North Regions.
A two-year project to revive communities that have been liberated by the military from Boko Haram control has been launched in Yaounde. The project which is the Cameroon component of the Lake Chad Basin Stabilisation Strategy is set up by the United Nations Development Programme alongside the government of Cameroon and other partners.
During the first meeting of the National Partner Platform on Monday, October 7, all partners pledged to support the project that seeks to provide safety, security, basic needs and a better livelihood to nine communities earmarked in the North and Far North Regions.
Presenting the project, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, Jean Luc Stallon, said the project which is divided into nine pillars has as main objective to stabilise the Boko Haram affected communities. This, by maintaining minimum security conditions, providing essential basic services and offering immediate livelihood opportunities to the local population in the communities. Thus schools, markets, markets, hospitals, courts, police and gendarmerie posts and other structures destroyed during Boko Haram attacks will be reconstructed to provide basic services to the local population.
“We expect to see the internally displaced persons of these two regions return to their communities. We expect to see these communities regain the steam that they had prior to the crisis and we expect to see better standards of living for the inhabitants of these regions when the project is fully implemented,” Paul Tasong, the Minister Delegate at the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, said. He added that the project could serve as model in reviving livelihood in communities affected by violence in the North West and South West Regions.
