UN, US hail government for organizing Major Natonal Dialogue.
The United Nations, the United States as well as other leading world powers and organisations, have congratulated President Paul Biya on the successful organisation of the Major National Dialogue (MND). The MND, it should be recalled, was convened by the Head of State on September 10. It held at the Yaounde Conference Centre from September 30 to October 4, with far-reaching recommendations intended to put an end to the lingering socio-political crisis in the North West and South West Regions.
The international community has not only saluted the move as a major step in the right direction, it has also expressed the wish to see the resolutions arrived at during the five-day national gathering fully implemented.
The spokesperson of the UN Secretary General, in a message on October 5, said Antonio Guterres hopes to see the implementation of the Yaounde resolutions, and pledged the body’s unalloyed readiness to assist Cameroon in any way possible to come out of the current political quagmire in the Anglophone Regions. “The Secretary-General … welcomes the holding of the national dialogue and encourages meaningful follow-up. He reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to assist the authorities and the people of Cameroon in this regard,” part of the message read.
The SG’s spokesman also spoke of the release of opposition leader, Prof Maurice Kamto: “The Secretary General is encouraged by the decision announced by President Paul Biya on October 4 release Maurice Kamto, leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), as well as 102 members of the party. He also takes note of the release of another 333 individuals in connection with the crisis in the North West and South West Regions. The Secretary General encourages the Cameroonian authorities to continue to adopt further confidence-building and reconciliation measures,” he added.
Other international organizations that have spoken about the holding of the MND and the release from detention of Prof. Kamto and co include the EU, La Francophonie and the Commonwealth.
