Uproar in Sangmelima after murder of bike rider.
Sangmelima, President Paul Biya’s constituency in the Dja and Lobo Division of the centre Region failed the litmus test for the concept of living together when the assault and killing of a young bike rider provoked scenes reprisals from the natives who felt victimized by settlers, notably the Bamouns last Wednesday, 9 October.
It took an emergency meeting organized by the SDO last Friday between the various communities for the hatchet to be buried after two days of looting, scores settling and personal vendetta.
The presence of higher education minister, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, and Olanag Obama of decentralization, spoke volumes of the determination of government to defuse tensions and restore the time-tested values of reconciliation and harmony.
The various communities resolved to be each others’ keeper and ensure that there was no further breach of peace. The natives were told to embrace the settlers for the development of the town which is quite cosmopolitan.
According to reports, trouble began last Wednesday when a group of young men identified as colleagues to the late bike rider stormed the police station where the suspected aggressor was arrested and detained, demanding mob justice.
The situation created tension and according to a local from the area, groups of vandals took advantage to attack shops in Sangmelima and made away with a number of goods.
Reports say this situation created a general panic that led to the close-down of shops, banks, public services and other big structures.
According to a release from the Senior Divisional Officer of the Dja and Lobo Division, David Koulbout Aman, elements of law and order were deployed in their numbers and the situation was gradually returning to normal in Sangmelima.
