Killings in Wum: Investigations opened to track perpetrators.

The commission to track, identify and bring to book those responsible for property damages in the Lake Nyos resettlement camp in Wum, Menchum Division in the North West Region, set up by the Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique, on June 1, 2019, in response to May 30 breaking 31 burning of houses, property damages and humanitarian needs effectively began executing its assignment but just to meet a new twist and escalation of the violence.

A Hausa community leader and one other person were killed and five others wounded in a renewed violence by a group of Hausa and Aku youths who decided to take the law into their hands by carrying out targeted acts of vandalism in Wum on June 3, 2019. The incident also led to the destruction of several houses including properties and the burning down of the Palaces of Naikom and Waindo.

This new wave of violence comes barely three days after secessionist activists allegedly attacked and burned 40 houses, damaged property and rendered several inhabitants of the Lake Nyos resettlement Camp in Wum homeless and stranded.

In the latest press release dated June 4, 2019, the Governor condemned such acts of jungle justice and appealed to all political, traditional and religious authorities to mobilize and accompany administrative authorities in a crusade for a long lasting peace and security in the affected division and the entire North West Region.

Still, the Governor fervently called on victims of the acts of violence by secessionists “to exercise restraint, calm and most of all, avoid any form of instrumentalisation that could lead to intercommunity skirmishes.” Security forces on the ground were commended in the press release for their prompt intervention that significantly contributed to check the situation from degenerating.
