It was expected that Maurice Kamto, MRC leader, would be chastened by the discontinuance of proceedings against him and 102 MRC supporters but he has vowed to continue with his post-election protests following his release from jail.
In an interview with RFI last week, Kamto said he was unmoved by the head of state’s decision, questioning the motive of their arrests in the first place.
“We are going to continue with our national resistance programme in a manner and modality which we will tell our supporters when the time comes,” Maurice Kamto told RFI.
He completely dismissed reports claiming he had reached a private agreement with Paul Biya for their release. He also used the opportunity to call for the release of all those arrested in connection with the crisis in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon and the holding of an inclusive dialogue.
This attitude of the MRC leader who came a distant second at the October 2019 presidential election has been berated by government as act of ingratitude and a desire to remain extremist.
Rene Emmanuel Sadi, minister of communication, slammed Kamto and co for their ambiguous stance on what he considered a gesture of magnanimity on the part of President Biya which had been sincerely hailed by the 333 released Anglophone detainees.
In an interview with CRTV last Friday, Sadi said he was not surprised by the reaction of Kamto and co who have maintained an extremist rhetoric. He accused Kamto of brinkmanship and radicalism which were unbecoming of someone aspiring to lead the nation.
Sadi said Kamto’s claims of an electoral hold-up were unfounded, noting that nothing short of a miracle would have made him the winner he claimed to have been.
The government spokesman condemned the ingratitude of Kamto towards the sovereign and magnanimous gesture of clemency from Biya. He said he was however pleased by the declaration of satisfaction expressed by the international community on Biya’s determination for appeasement and giving room for the return of lasting peace to Cameroon.
