Cameroon Bar President slams lawyers for desecrating robes.
A photo circulating on social media portraying some lawyers dressed in their robes posing with a political leader at his residence has dragged the image of the Cameroon Bar in mud.
Tchakoute Patie Charles, President of the Cameroon Bar Association, has distanced himself from such an unprofessional action, saying it desecrates the legal profession.
“The photo in question desecrates the advocate’s robe which remains a fundamental attribute and symbol of the profession of Advocacy- and incident which I reprove with extreme firmness”, he said in a statement issued at the weekend
Tchakoute said the colleagues in question had abused the independent status by affiliating with a political party.
“The Cameroon Bar, conscious and jealous of its independent status, has not and does not seek alliance or affiliation with any political entity whatsoever or with any political leader whosoever”, the Batônnier warned.
He expressed regret that those pictured in the photo sought no authorization as required in exceptional circumstances.
“Private residences or homes are not places where the advocates professional attire can be worn openly, except under very exceptional circumstances, with the express and prior authorization of the Bar President or his duly appointed representative. However, such authorization was neither sought nor granted in this particular case”, the statement noted.
He reiterated the status and vocation of of the Cameroon Bar association as “a professional institution as well as a wise and conscientious observer of society.”
The statement by the Batônnier, observers say, is very timely. It shows him as a level-headed and practical person determined to protect the integrity of the legal profession no matter whose ox is gored. When lawyers went on a 4 day strike recently to protest disrespect from state institutions, Tchakoute was accused by pro-regime newspapers of fronting for Prof. Maurice Kamto, himself a member of the Bar, at that time still under detention. By railing against the action of his deviant colleagues this time around, he is vindicated.
