30.000 new HIV patients targeted in NW as Country Operational Plan gains steam.

Targeting 30.000 HIV infected persons across the North West region with the goal of managing and helping in improving lives was the major priority disclosed to some health experts in Bamenda. According to facilitators Cameroon has the highest HIV prevalence in West and Central Africa ranging, falling from 5.3% in 2004 to 3.4% in 2018. The North West which has a prevalence rate of 5.1 percent for those within the age range of 15 to 64 years needs assistance. That is why the next phase of the HIV free North West operational plan was launched. According to statistics 62,661 persons are living with HIV while about 36,626 are currently on treatment in the North West region.

Prof Tih Pius, the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services director, holds that, faced with this epidemic, "a concerted effort that is getting all health care providers on board is the gateway to reaching desired results".

Financed by the government through the ministry of public health, the regional delegate holds direct service delivery which entails provision of experienced and trained staff by the CBC in all 30 selected sites is an additional booster to the program for an achievement of desired results. He said despite the impressive drop in prevalence from 6.3% in 2011 to 4.8 % -2018, to 4%-2019, “we still need to do more to keep the epidemic under control and further ensure patients achieve viral suppression".

Convinced that the launching phase would be a spring into success, the project manager, Dr George Nkome, hinted amongst other approaches "redeployment of human resources to ensure all identified and HIV declared clients be linked to physical care to avoid a loss as this will be done through an initiation process  in the follow up scheme, tracking of all infected persons at both community and facility level, direct service delivery through the provision of extra resources and this it should be noted is  made possible through the scaling of the DAMA software which permits us to track and follow up the well being of infected persons on a daily basis ,and the index testing methodology to meet up with the 90-90 ,95-95 goals index by 2030.”

The ceremony which held at the conference hall of the North West Regional Fund for Health also saw amongst others in attendance District Medical Officers whose expertise further helped accelerate the opinion sample for effective realization.
