World Day of Elderly: CIFA scores points at Debut Phase.

Within the broad-based exposure to vulnerability owing to diverse constraints registered in the post and pre-crisis period, there exists a growing need to rebuild and revisit moral adherence for positive goals attainment. Having an objective of empowerment of teenage mothers and young widows in sustainable livelihood, promotion of community health care development, promotion of culture and enhancement of indigenous languages and cultural groups and fight against diverse violence forms through peace promotion, human rights, gender equality and disability inclusion, CIFA recently celebrated the day of the elderly in Bamenda.
The ceremony which held at the conference hall of the Cameroon Baptist Convention, according to the secretary general, Freida Fanda, is in a bid "to recognize and award elderly people whose distinctive roles have impacted their localities through community development". In addition "considering that they are parents and we are of one community we want to see them age happily and feel better and above all we want to see and remind them of their roles in peace building and how to avoid non communicable diseases".
Talking to The Horizon, Ngwanwi Lidwina, CEO of the barely months old non denominational organizations whose very first outing she terms a success said " motivated by a fireside experience ( an activity through which she listened to painful stories encountered by the old in the course of the crisis as they sat by the fireside thanks to a partner NGO HOFNA) I realised I cannot be indifferent. To this I became touched and decided to step out of my comfort zone to contribute my quota".
Additionally, "the crisis has brought untold misery, isolation and depression and loneliness to these elderly persons because most of their children have migrated to other regions leaving them frustrated. As such, our intention is to keep them happy and cheerful and this we do through our monthly outreach program where we visit the homes of these population and we intend pushing forth to the orphanages and other centers where we can be able to implant this vision".
She further regretted many have resorted to neglecting the elderly in major decisions of life whereas they embody a compendium of ideas that if shared can better harness and sharpen a peace loving and worth living society.
Munteh Florence, co-founder of HOFNA and whose breast CIFA has sucked, told the press:"We have come in to see how young people can get into social change. I thus talked to the old on their role in public mediation and through this we have been able to run initiatives on peace building and not just peace makers. Thus I reminded them it's time we begin resolving our problems at the local levels, that is in social groups, gatherings and njangis etc to avoid an escalation of the present crisis".
Considering that the facilitators were quite young and had an elderly audience they all shared one view. "We were reminding them of what they know and not teaching them. Based on their ages, they are an encyclopedia of experiences and such a medium only gives us an opportunity to tap into their intellectual largesse.
According to Wango Eleen, a main facilitator and CEO of Beacon of Light Association (BELA), "we tried identifying the broad concept of peace and strategies for peace building. Through this they shared their distinctive roles in peace building".
Mama Awoh Amina, in this initiative, told the press: "I have learnt to first of all live healthy through good feeding, and contribute in peace building by mediation.”
For his part, Kaah Abel told The Horizon: "This is the privilege I have had in this month of October for being noted for doing a good job in my singular role. This has further taught me I have to leave footprints so my offspring will be better tomorrow. I have further learnt to invest in people and not material things.”
The ceremony was further crowned by the award of certificates of recognition to some elderly people for their distinctive roles in community and peace building amongst which was 92-year-old Mama Cheah whose unifying comportment was saluted by all and sundry.
