At celebration of 74th UN Day in Cameroon:Major National Dialogue hailed as step towards peace, sustainable development.

The recently held Major National Dialogue (MND) on the Anglophone crisis whose recommendations are awaiting implementation has been hailed as a major step towards peace and sustainable development in Cameroon.

Laudatory words to this effect were expressed during celebrations marking the 74th edition of the UN Day in Yaounde on October 24, 2019 under the theme “Mutualisation of Peace Efforts at the Service of Sustainable Development.”

The Minister Delegate at the Ministry of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu who chaired celebrations singled out the Major National Dialogue convened by the Head of State, President Paul Biya as a glaring example to illustrate peace efforts and said recommendations adopted consensually were currently under review.

He said the historic event accompanied by the release of some 333 persons arrested in connection with the armed conflict and the freeing of some political prisoners “is clear indication that President Paul Biya is willing to see that peace returns to the once soothing Cameroon”.

He equally lauded the efforts of Cameroon’s defence and security forces in ensuring both national and international peace.

“Cameroon defence and security forces are currently deployed in five UN Missions”, he stated.

The Minister presented peace and security efforts in Cameroon, all intended to enable the country attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contained in its Agenda 2030 for the eradication of poverty, to ensure peace, prosperity for people and the planet. He said government actions, in conjunction with stakeholders, were in line with efforts geared at keeping or restoring peace in the country.

“The government of Cameroon is still ready and banking on the constructive and fruitful cooperation and collaboration from each and every one, in attaining its ideals for peace and security, by achieving its development Goals, through strengthening multilateralism.”

The UN, other international organisations friendly countries and the civil society have been supporting the Cameroon’s efforts for a return to peace and normalcy, especially in the crisis-ridden North West and South West Regions. Minister Mbayu expressed the gratitude of government to them and called for more synergy of action for the country to attain the “desired future” by 2030 in an atmosphere of peace and security.

For her part, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System to Cameroon, Allegra Maria Del Pilar Baiocchi, said, “I wanted to salute the recent efforts that have been put in place by the government of Cameroon in terms of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2030 and most specifically, the work that has been done right now on the next phase of the Development policy of the country which is really committed to introduce the SDGs.”

Concerning peace efforts, she saluted the holding of the Major National Dialogue, release of people detained in connection with crisis, as well as militants of some political parties. She said, “Peace is constructed through development but the development has to be sustainable and most importantly inclusive.”

Reechoing the words of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, she advised the effective implementation of dialogue recommendations and continuing with confidence-building measures. The UN official decried the attacks against humanitarian missions preventing assistance from reaching the needy.
