Voluntary repatriation of CAR refugees in Cameroon underway.
Some Central African Republic, CAR, citizens who have been taking refuge in Cameroon as a result of the socio-political unrest in their country, began returning to their homeland last Wednesday on mutual consent. This is within the framework of a voluntary repatriation agreement which host country, Cameroon, signed with the Office of the United Nationals Higher Commissioner for Refugees and the Central African Republic government in June this year. To this effect, the Minister of Territory Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, was in the East Region last Wednesday, 23 October, to preside over a ceremony to officially see off the first set of 500 refugees who have agreed to go back home.
According to officials, the voluntary repatriation exercise will involve about 6,000 refugees of the over 291,000 that are spread in different refugee camps in the country. The move comes on the heels of relative peace that has returned to the neighbouring Central African Republic following years of civil unrest after the 2013 coup d’état that ousted President François Bozizé. It also follows the signing, on February 6, 2019, of a historic peace deal in the country between the government and leaders of rebel groups to put an end to the deadly conflict that led to the loss of hundreds of lives and property. The voluntary repatriation move comes amidst assurances by officials of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Yaounde that more efforts are being made to improve the living conditions of refugees living in Cameroon. Cameroon is currently host to nearly 500,000 refugees, most of them in the East, Adamawa and Far North Regions. From this number, there are about 300,000 Central African refugees, 100,000 Nigerians, over 25,000 urban refugees from 21 countries as well as and 8,000 asylum seekers.
