Institutional News: Aid has overstayed its relevance, grant solution to the crisis, IDPs cry out.
By Etoh Anzah George in Bamenda.
Through governments efforts in providing immediate basic home support kits for persons who got displaced as a result of the crisis tons and tons of humanitarian gifts have continued to be distributed to IDPs in Bamenda and supervised by some NW administrative officials. The recent maiden distribution phase championed by the newly installed SDO for Mezam Emile Mooh was an opportunity for some of the displaced to express the need to see a speedy return to normalcy. Before now many had long popped up at the state owned DDR center for registration. And during distribution expressed gratitude for being benefactors.
But lately gratitude for being offered fish has turned to rude awakening at persistent precariousness. Those to whom the Horizon talked with expressed the desire to see not just definite solution but the return to normalcy. To this IDP displaced from Oku: " I am a father. We have been expecting the head of state to rise and grant a solution". He added: "the aid has overstayed its longevity,I never saw 3 years chasing gifts and no solution. Indeed the gifts and gesture is good which I commend but how long will we continue like this? Sadly enough I came here expecting to receive a mattress because we are about 5 sharing 1 mattress but apparently when I call one of the officials he told me it was coming but since then nothing has come".
To another:" I registered since September and I haven't been called. Today I was glad when I received a call to one up but sadly I wasn't given a ticket to which a kit would have been allocated".
Responding to the above and more, Anchang Paul facilitator of the process, said: "Mattresses are distributed to larger families in a bid to have it serve a greater population. If they have not been given let them be contented with what's available.
On the question of double collection by some IDPs and none alike, he hinted: "The only way to distinguish an IDP from a non IDP is by registration. Thus we are backed by a registration to get it done".
For his part, the SDO for Mezam saluted their availability but insisted they should be orderly and respect state rules and regulations. He re-echoed the head state’s speech to Ambazonia fighters when he assured nothing was going to happen if they voluntarily turned in their weapons.
