Abdoullahi Aliou and the Menchum Assignment: Stakes and expectations.
By Etoh Anzah George in Bamenda.
Many could be seen chanting songs of joy when they queued up in rows to bid farewell to Kamga Charles outgoing SDO for Menchum. To them the fatherly hearted man had charmed them in his level headed and well known "yes yes yes" approach even in issues he couldn’t grant. This depicted a listening ear which he gave the people in all times and moments. Thirty seven- year-old Abdoullahi Aliou was the second amongst the 4 new SDOs in the North West region to be installed by North West governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique. Menchum division is a metropolitan society harboured by a dominantly Christian and Mbororo settlers. The latter and former being farmers and herdsmen with a minority ii other economic ventures for survival have overtime been reported in multiple farmer-grazier conflicts. In the wake of all these, bloodshed on fierce confrontation in the advent of multiple disunity erupted with human loss on a sky-rocketing rate.
In addition, owing to the 3 years and ongoing Anglophone crisis, some communities of Ketcha,Upkwa ,and Naikom palaces just to name a few saw homes burnt with the palace structures reduced to ashes. Separatist fighters who in an outing claimed rights to the perpetration did not stand the outcome as the population was attacked by Mbororo settlers who were bent on tracking down its perpetrators. Parallel aggressions led to the death of several non-Mbororos breeding a state of fear and jeopardizing the living together concept.
Menchum division’s Mbororo class in particular are said to have hardly responded to the separatist calls and this alone is alleged to be a vexation to the fighters. These and more compound the task of Abdoullahi Aliou the newly appointed SDO for Menchum.
Reminding him of his administrative obligations in the territory, Adolphe Lele insisted:"Build confidence with all, encourage living together by way of fair administration, be tolerant," as gateway to success. Being the former D.O for the Kongni Sub-division, he thus takes over the role with a chunk of files to handle.
Considering that barely 14 hours after his installation, a repentant Amba fighter (Ikom POLYCARP Bah) who confessed and apologised to the community was brutally butchered by unidentified men, the weight of peace thus weighs on the shoulders of the senior civil administrator.Being a real family man with 2 wives and 10 children and hopefully backed by Allah’s will of fairness and non violence he is thus watched closely by the over 1000 persons who came out to witness his installation.
