Search for Southern Cameroons sympathizers intensifies.

The Anglophone crisis which began with a lawyers’ and teachers’ strike in November last three years is far from over. As a matter of fact, it is worsening by the day. Anglophone activists in the South West and North West regions are arrested every now and then and incarcerated either in detention facilities in the two regions or in Kondengui maximum security prison in Yaounde. The Horizon has been informed, reliably, that their detention conditions are usually appalling, as they are subjected to torture and other inhumane treatment.

For this reason, some of the detainees do everything to escape from detention either through bribery or trickery. In so doing, some even lose their lives. Only two weeks ago, a young man in his teens, named Alphonse Ambe Ngwa, who attempted to escape from their camps in Bamenda, was shot dead by a police officer on guard. However, The Horizon has learned that some detainees succeed to flee or are helped by the same military after all.

Such was the case of a man and a woman, named Elias Nji Tonge and Feh Praxede Macauley respectively, who were kidnapped in Bamenda in Mezam Division and taken to the military camp in Bamenda where they were locked up under serious harsh conditions. We were also told, Feh Praxede Macauley was arrested for giving medical assistance to the separatist Southern Cameroon National Council ( SCNC ), for spreading what the security forces called “ false information” about the Cameroon armed forces as well as for keeping and disseminating pictures and videos of torture of unarmed Anglophone civilians by the army.

She was arrested on 26th of April 2019 and was found to be missing four days after being abandoned along the road with serious wounds and torture scars that can only request medical attention to survive.

Fearing the heavy sentence that might befall her, which could be life imprisonment or even death if she is caught again, the duo hatched a plan that led to her fleeing the country.

“I can’t say exactly how they managed to find their way out of the country”, some military men told The Horizon.

“There’s maximum security around any separatist caught and there’re no signs of any of the doors or windows having been broken in the camps they were kept. However, I believe they must have corrupted some of the security guards here. Some of them, I must confess, can be very corrupt”.

The search for the escapees that began on 03May when their absence was noticed has been intensified. If caught, they are very likely to face life imprisonment.
